USS Hope (I)
USS G. W. Blunt

Acting ENSIGN Gardner G. Curtis

Acting Ensign Gardner G. Curtis had an alias. He enlisted in the Navy as a seaman under the name of Charles Brown. His enlistment was from 4 June 1861 to 18 June 1864 serving aboard the USS Wabash. Quartermaster Brown received his commission on 8 June 1864 as Acting Ensign Gardner G. Curtis until his discharge 8 November 1865. It was a common practice to enlist under a false name in case you decided to desert the Navy down the road. This way they were chasing a ghost. He served aboard the USS Supply; G.W. Blunt (commanding officer); last C.O. of the USS Hope. ENS.Curtis was wounded in the hand while C.O. of the Blunt.
