Civil War Medal

Sidewheel Steamer:
  • Built in 1864 as the sidewheel steamer Fanny at Cincinnati OH.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased by the US navy at Mound City, IL. 3 February 1865
  • Commissioned, USS Grosbeak, 24 February 1865, Acting Master Thomas Burns in command
  • Grosbeak initially reported for duty with the iron-clad monitor squadron stationed in Kentucky
  • She next joined the Mississippi squadron patrolling the river from Cairo to the White River
  • Grosbeak rescued between 60 and 80 survivors from the river steamer Sultana which caught fire and exploded off Memphis 27 April, 1865
  • She transferred the survivors to hospital and also transported wounded men from boats further down the river to Memphis for proper care
  • Decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register, at Mound City, IL. circa Augsut 1865
  • She was sold there 17 August 1865
  • Final Disposition, Sold to private hands and renamed Mollie Hambleton, Oct 11, 1865. She was sold to Spicer Nagle for trade along the Trinity River, Texas. Sank and lost at Galveston, Tex., June 9, 1871.
