ENCLOSURE "A" (Continued)

PART IV - ORDNANCE.

        A. The performance of both rockets and launchers was completely satisfactory to this Command. Misfires and mechanical jams were present the number encountered indicates a sharp decrease from the amount previously experienced. It is believed that the current maintenance procedure is eliminating many of the minor mechanical causalities.

The performance of the 5"/38 dual purpose gun, 40 mm singles and 20 mn guns on all ships was as expected. No serious mechanical casualties were experienced on any gun. Routine misfires were experienced on the 20 mm guns but those presented no serious difficulty.

Several Mk 51 Mod 3 5"/38 directors are now inoperative. Repairs or spare sights cannot be obtained. Every opportunity is being utilized to contact repair ships capable of effecting these repairs. Likewise, several Mark 14 sights are inoperative and repairs have not been made due to lack of facilities.

The Mark 3 smoke-pots being supplied to ships of this Command have been entirely unsatisfactory. Approximately 5O% of those used have been duds. It is believed that the booster ignition element has deteriorated due age and stowage conditions prior to delivery to ships of this Command.

The personnel assigned to the guns continue their past excellent performances under fire, Daily combat experience is rapidly developing the comparatively inexperienced men into well trained gun crews.
