ENCLOSURE "A" (Continued)

          At 2110, 13 April 1945, LC(FF) 535 grounded on NAKANSHI reef. This ship retracted with no damage resulting.

          At 2310, 16 April 1945, LSM(R) 199 reported striking a reel` off the Eastern end of Ie Shima. 2315, subject ship retracted and no damage was received.

          At 16 April 1945, LSM(R) 198 reported striking a reef in the sane area. LSM(R) 198 retracted and received no damage.

          At 1700, 17 April 1945, LSM(R) 193 struck reef in Grid location 0516 NAGO WAN and received a slit in her bottom 2 to 4 inches wide and six feet long. The hole was located in compartment B-1 between frames 21 and 22. Flooding was brought under control and LSM(R) 193 was repaired by LSD 7, Repairs were completed at 1745, 19 April 1945.

PART V (B) - BATTLE DAMAGE TO ENEMY UNITS

          LSM(R) 189, while on radar picket patrol station 14, 12 April 1945, succeeded in shooting down two enemy planes (KATES), one VAL, and assisted in downing of another VAL. During this same action, LSM(R) 190 snot down two VALS, and assisted LSM(R) 189 in the destruction of another. On the same date, LSM(R) 191 shot down one VAL at radar picket station 1.

          LSM(R) 194 while patrolling at radar picket station 10 on 18 April 19145, fired on a BETTY with 5"/38" and observed the plane going down in flames.

          LSM(R) 196 while on patrol off Point Bolo on 3 April 1945, shot down and destroyed one enemy fighter plane with 20 mm fire. While on anti-small boat patrol between islands of Ie and Okinawa on morning of 18 April 1945, LSM(R) 196 killed six Japanese swimmers by 20 mm and rifle fire.

          On afternoon of 6 April 1945, LSM(R) 197 destroyed by 40 mm gunfire, one OSCAR. LSM(R) 197 was on screening patrol off the Hagushi landing beaches.

          In cases where exact type of gunfire is not mentioned in plane destruction, all guns were firing.

          From the period 13 through 16 April 1945, LSM(R)'s 192, 193, 196 199, and LC(FF) 535 were assigned to night harassment patrols against the island of Ie Shima. Rockets, star-shells, 40 an 20 mm fire were used in order to confuse and disrupt Japanese movements. Many fires resulted but full extent of damage is unknown. On the morning, of 16 April 1945, the patrol group launched a rocket bombardment in support of our 1anding forces. The target area for these ships was a defensive position of revetted trenches and automatic weapons. Reports from Army observers that our troops received no opposition from this area, support belief that mission was successful. (See Enclosure B).
