USS Ponce (LPD-15)



CAPT. Robert A. Klaszky, USN

CAPT Robert A. Klaszky graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and was commissioned through the NROTC program in May 1992. Following commissioning he attended Surface Warfare Officer's School in Newport, RI for Division Officer training.

His initial sea assignment was aboard USS FLATLEY (FFG 21) homeported in Mobile, AL and Pascagoula, MS as Damage Control Assistant and Electrical Officer. He later served as Ordnance Officer and Navigator until the ship's decommissioning in May 1996. CAPT Klaszky reported to USS ROSS (DDG 71) in Sep 1996 as Fire Control Officer and a member of the ship's commissioning crew in Pascagoula, MS. Following commissioning ROSS was homeported at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.

CAPT Klaszky reported to Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA in Sep 1998 as a student in the Information Warfare curriculum. He graduated with distinction in Sep 2000, receiving a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering.

CAPT Klaszky's first Department Head assignment was Combat Systems Officer aboard USS TAYLOR (FFG 50) in Mayport, FL from May 2001 – Sep 2002. He completed a Mediterranean deployment in support of Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOR as part of Standing Naval Forces Mediterranean. In Dec 2002 CAPT Klaszky reported aboard USS YORKTOWN (CG 48) in Pascagoula, MS as Combat Systems Officer. During his tour he completed a FIFTH Fleet deployment to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.

CAPT Klaszky completed his Executive Officer (Special Mission) tour as Damage Control Assistant aboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) in Norfolk, VA from May 2005 - May 2007. During his tour he completed a highly successful INSURV followed by an eight-month deployment to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.

In July 2007 CAPT Klaszky reported to USS WASP (LHD 1) as Operations Officer. He completed a four-month surge deployment to the Arabian Gulf in support of the first operational deployment of the MV-22 Osprey aircraft followed by an extensive eight-month dry-dock availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

CAPT Klaszky reported to Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron FOUR as Executive Officer in Mar 2009 and completed a seven-month deployment to the United Arab Emirates as part of Commander, Task Group 56.7. He assumed duties as Commanding Officer in Oct 2010, completed two deployment training cycles, and deployed to Kuwait in Jan 2012 as Commander, Task Group 56.5.

In Apr 2012 CAPT Klaszky reported to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in Bahrain as Current Operations Director in the Maritime Operations Center through Jun 2013. He reported aboard Carrier Strike Group EIGHT in Jul 2013 serving as Flag Operations Officer (N3) until Aug 2014. CAPT Klaszky’s next assignment is Commanding Officer of AFSB(I)-15 PONCE in Nov 2014. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3 awards), and various service and campaign awards.
