Camanche Class Auxiliary Minelayer:

  • The fourth Canonicus was laid down in 1943 by the Marietta Manufacturing Co., Point Pleasant, WV
  • Launched 7 September 1942
  • Commissioned USAMP Major General Erasmus Weaver (MP 10)
  • Acquired by the Navy 20 December 1949 and reclassified as an Auxiliary Minelayer, ACM-12
  • Reclassified MMA-12, 7 February 1955
  • Renamed Canonicus 1 May 1955
  • Canonicus was never placed in commission
  • Struck from the Naval Register 1 July 1960
  • Sold in 1961 and renamed Ocean Star
  • Renamed Kipman, and Zodiac
  • Acquired by General R. W. Johnson (Johnson & Johnson Co.), renamed Golden Crest and was used as a traveling office
  • Became a New York-New Jersey Pilot Boat in 1969 and renamed New Jersey (Pilot No. 2)
  • Scrapped in 1993.

  • Displacement 1,320 t.
  • Length 188' 2"
  • Beam 37'
  • Draft 12' 6"
  • Speed 12.5 kts.
  • Complement 69
  • Armament: One 40mm gun mount
  • Propulsion: Two 1,200shp reciprocating steam engines, two shafts.
