PG-94 Chehalis


Tacoma Class Motor Gunboat:

  • The second Chehalis was laid down in 1967 at Tacoma Boatbuilding Co., Tacoma, WA
  • Launched 8 June 1968
  • Commissioned USS Chehalis (PG-94), 8 November 1969
  • Decommissioned 1 October 1977 and transferred to the Naval Sea Systems Command, Carderock Division
  • Converted to a Research Vessel and renamed R/V Athena
  • As of September 2012 Athena is still active and operating out of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City Division, Naval Support Activity Panama City, FL
  • Scrapped in 2016.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 250 t.
  • Length 165'
  • Beam 24'
  • Complement 28
  • Speed 13 kts. on diesel and 40 kts. on gas turbine
  • Armament: One 3"/50 gun mount, one 40mm gun mount and two twin .50 cal. machine guns
  • Propulsion: Two Cummins VT12-875-M diesel engines rated at 725 hp each and one General Electric LM 1500 gas turbine; two shafts.
