Both Navies are training at sea during the final phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training 2000. CARAT is an annual series of bilateral exercises between the United States and Southeast Asian navies designed to promote interoperability between nations.

335k 22 August 2003: Kaneohe, Hi. - Chief petty officer selectees from Reuben James congratulate each other after conquering the leadership reaction course during the Fourth Annual Chief Selectee Fleet Marine Force Challenge hosted by Fleet Marine Force chief petty officers and Marines from Combat Surface Support Group Three. Nearly 100 selectees competed in the confidence course, obstacle course, leadership reaction course, pugel stick training and a general-purpose tent pitch. Reuben James selectees took first place in the days competition. The day-long event was part of a five-week initiation designed to emphasize Navy core values of honor, courage and commitment while transitioning to their prospective rank of chief petty officer.

284k 09 November 2012: Muaru, Brunei Darussalam - Sailors assigned to the guided-missile frigate Reuben James and Royal Brunei Armed Forces compete during a sports day event. Both countries competed in soccer, softball, football, volleyball and tug-o-war. Sports day came after the closing ceremony of the 18th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training exercise between the U.S. Navy and Royal Brunei Armed Forces. CARAT is a series of bilateral military exercises between the U.S. Navy and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Timor Leste. CARAT Brunei has been part of the series since it began in 1995. The overarching goal of CARAT Brunei 2012 is to enhance regional capabilities and cooperation, promote understanding, and improve interoperability and readiness of participating forces.
