  • Built, built at Greenpoint N. Y. in 1859, for Southern Steamship Co.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Placed in service as SS Florida, circa 1859
  • SS Florida was one of 14 steamers of Charles Morgan's Southern Steamship Co. which Maj. Gen. Mansfield Lovell "impressed for public service" at New Orleans, 15 January 1862,
  • Commissioned, CSS Florida in January 1861
  • CSS Florida operated as a Confederate States-owned blockade runner
  • On her first run through the blockade Florida arrived at Havana, 23 March 1862, with 1,000 bales of cotton
  • On her next run she loaded 211 bales in St. Joseph Bay near Pensacola where she was captured by Acting Master Elnathan Lewis with armed boats from USS Pursuit
  • Purchased by the Navy at Philadelphia, 20 September 1862
  • Commissioned USS Hendrick Hudson, 30 December 1862 at Philadelphia,PA. Acting Master John E. Giddings in command
  • During the Civil War USS Hendrick Hudson was assigned to the East Gulf Blockading Squadron
    Assigned to blockading duty off East Pass, St. George's Sound, FL.
    Captured schooner Margaret, 1 February 1863
    Captured schooner Teresa, 16 April 1863
  • Reassigned to the East Gulf Blockading Squadron, after refit at Boston, off the mouth o the Suwannee River, 28 December 1863
    Rammed and sank blockade runner, schooner Wild Pigeon off Key West, 21 March 1864
    Participated in an Army expedition in the vicinity of St. Marks, FL., 27 February to 7 March 1865
  • Decommissioned, 8 August 1865, at Philadelphia, PA.
  • Sold, 12 September 1865, and re-documented SS Hendrick Hudson
