Commanding Officer USS Gunston Hall (LSD-44)
Enlisted in 1997, Commander Van Loenen served onboard USS STETHEM (DDG 63) as an Operations Specialist Second Class. In 2000, Commander Van Loenen was selected for the Broaden Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training program. A 2005 graduate of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program from Worcester State College in Worcester, MA, Commander Van Loenen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He is originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado.

A career surface warfare officer, Commander Van Loenen shipboard assignments include: USS MCCAMPBELL (DDG 85) as Main Propulsion Division Officer and Anti-submarine Warfare Officer, USS GREEN BAY (LPD 20) as Navigator, USS PORTER (DDG 78) as Chief Engineer, and AMPHIBIOUS SQUADRON 1 as Logistics Officer and Operations Officer.

Ashore, he served as an officer instructor at the AEGIS Training and Readiness Command. He also served as a maritime warfare instructor at Surface Warfare Officer School. Most recently, he graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, RI where he earned a Masters of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies and completed the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School strategic planning course.

His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards.

CDR Van Loenen reported aboard GUNSTON HALL in April 2021 as Executive Officer and became Commanding Officer in 2022.
