USS Harpers Ferry (LSD-49)


CDR Brian Edgar De Laney

CDR DeLaney was born in Monument, Colorado and graduated from Lewis Palmer High School in 1991. He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1995 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Marine Transportation and a Coast Guard Third Mates Unlimited Tonnage License.

Commander DeLaney reported on board USS CLEVELAND (LPD-7) in March 1996 serving as Propulsion Division Officer and later First Division Officer. While on board the ship participated in RIMPAC ’96, deployed to the Arabian Gulf, and received the Battle E. His second Division Officer tour was on board USNS TIPPECANOE (TAO-199) as the Military Detachment Officer-in-Charge. The entire tour was spent forward deployed in Seventh Fleet and six months of it in the Arabian Gulf. During his tour, the ship conducted well over 300 Underway Replenishments and supported OPERATION DESERT FOX.

Commander DeLaney’s first Department Head tour was as Combat System Officer on board USS ELLIOT (DD-967) which earned the Battle E, NATO Sea Sparrow Clean Sweep Award, and the James P. Chezek Gunnery Award prior to her decommissioning. He then reported on board USS CLEVELAND (LPD-7) again, this time as Operations Officer. CLEVELAND completed an extensive 10 month Service Life Extension yard period and aggressive training cycle prior to deployment.

Commander DeLaney’s shore duty has included the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a Masters Degree in Transportation Management, and as Current Operations Officer at Commander, Naval Surface Forces in San Diego, CA. While at SURFOR, he was responsible for writing the Pacific Fleet Deployment Plan out seven years in advance.

After SURFOR, CDR DeLaney volunteered for a tour in Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. He spent one year on the Multi-National Forces-Iraq staff as the Oil Operations Officer, responsible to General Patreaus for all oil related issues throughout Iraq. He reported on board USS GERMANTOWN (LSD-42) as Executive Officer in September of 2009 and took over as the Commanding Officer of USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD-49) in May 2011.
