CDR Karrey “DeWayne” Sanders Commanding Officer

Commander Karrey “DeWayne” Sanders is a native of Oakland, California and raised in Sacramento, California. He enlisted in the Navy in 1986 and completed tours onboard USS MIDWAY (CV-41), USS CAPE COD (AD-43), and Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado, California. In 1994, he was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and received his commission in 1997 after earning his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from San Diego State University. Additionally, Commander Sanders received a Master of Science in Software Engineering from National University in 2004 and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 2008.

Tours as a commissioned officer include: USS CURTS (FFG-38) as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer from January 1998 to March 2000; USS HIGGINS (DDG-76) as the Assistant Operations Officer from June 2000 to October 2001; Tactical Training Group Pacific as an Instructor from November 2001 to March 2004; USS RUSHMORE (LSD-47) as the 1st Lieutenant from October 2004 to February 2006; USS TARAWA (LHA-1) as the 1st Lieutenant from March 2006 to January 2007; United States Central Command as an Action Officer for Detainee Affairs from January 2007 to July 2007; Naval War College as a student from August 2007 to June 2008; Joint Functional Component Command for Space, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California as the Deputy Special Technical Operations Chief from July 2008 to August 2011; and Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet as N40 Action Officer and N45 Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff from August 2011 to January 2012.

Commander Sanders has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with three gold stars, and numerous other unit commendations, campaign ribbons and awards.
