An Image Of History

"The dawn was bright and blowing. Angels perched unseen on the shrouds and crosstrees. Young men, fated to survive and become old men dying abed half a century hence, would forever remember this hour, when an army at dawn made for the open sea in a cause none could yet comprehend. Ashore, as the great fleet glided past, dreams of them stepped, like men alive, into the rooms where their loved ones lay sleeping."
From Volume One: An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943 Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for History by Rick Atkinson.

"For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, nor do they have any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now long perished; nor have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun."
From Qohelet / Ecclesiastes, 9th chapter, 4th/6th verse, translated from the original in Hebrew and published by the Koren Publishers of Jerusalem, Israel.

The old adage of a picture being worth a thousand words is certainly applicable in a photographic history of the United States Navy. There are thousands of images in the archives here, spanning from the 18th century to the present day. Each generation of youth answering its call to arms if the need be to defend the nation's freedom or interests.
The photos here hopefully represent some idea of the period of which those who lived through those times can best answer the question of "What did you do in the war or in keeping the peace Daddy, and how did it affect you when you left as a youth and came back as an adult?"

Seeing history made through the eyes of those who lived it color that generation's perspective and outlook on life.
The person who left as a youth and as an individual on his way to the armed forces learns to work in a team environment, and hopefully becomes more conscious of himself from an individual to a generational perspective, realizing that actions at a fortuitous time and place can determine the course of events, but not losing himself in the idea that he is the sum of all parts.

In the Second Book of Shmuel (Samuel), 10th chapter, 12th verse, translated from the original in Hebrew and published by the Koren Publishers of Jerusalem, Israel, can perhaps aptly describe the proper state of mind one should have in defending their county while in its service:
Yoav, the head of King David's Army, said to his brother Avishay:
"Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our G-D, and the Lord do that which seems good in his eyes."

In our commonality we are forged from a group of individuals into a larger grouping, become a community of men and women representing our nation wherever our flag is to be seen, and as a consequence representing its ideals wherever we go. We are the image of our nation in its history.
